Washington From Pedicab Perspective

Due to the economic crisis in the United States, people have to find creative ways to earn money, among them are the drivers of the Washington’s pedicab or a bike with a trailer that looks like a ricksha. These tricycles allow visitors a totally different view of Washington, transporting them to the monuments and other tourist attractions.

Grent Godra drives a Vietnamese family from California to the Natural History Museum. He takes them to a part of town with lots of Asian restaurants. Godra is an artist, but makes a living driving pedicab.

“Good driver of pedicab is someone who successfully amuse its passengers, because most of our driving are interaction between the driver and the people sitting behind you,” said Godra for Voice of America.

Pedicabs are used in Washington for several years. The vehicle is also known as ricksha – bike, used long ago in Southeast Asia. In Washington, pedicab drivers  negotiate price with customers driving. The average price is $20 for 30 minutes. Some riders have their bike, and the others are rented.

Steve Balinski drove pedicab in New York, and he is now the owner of the company “Capitol Pedicab”. He says that there is no rule about age of the clients, his customers are young and old, too. “The ride is very romantic, and many couples enjoy. We have many elderly people,” Balinski said.

Drivers of pedicab are as diverse as their customers. Many of them are students, but there are those who are aged between 50 and 60 years. Some, like Karl Chandler (45), which is a producer of television news, in this job in order to stay fit.

“It’s fun. Earn money and get to know people and tourists from different countries. I had customers from all states except Hawaii and many tourists from around the world. The other day, for just one hour, I had customers from Iraq, Kuwait and Trinidad” said Chandler.

The owner of the company’s “Capitol Pedicab” Steve Balinski, said that Washington encourages people to ride a bike more often. It is personally important for him that he is leading a business that is good for the human environment.
